Apple Debuts Digital ID Feature to Simplify TSA Checks Nationwide
In a move poised to revolutionize domestic air travel and digital identity management, Apple has officially unveiled its digital ID feature. It allows US users to create and store a secure digital version of identification in Apple Wallet, using information from their passports. This move was announced by Apple on November 12, 2025. The beta rollout begins immediately at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints across more than 250 airports. It offers a seamless alternative to fumbling for physical IDs amid the post-REAL-ID enforcement scramble.
The launch comes at an opportune time, just weeks after the federal REAL ID deadline took full effect on May 7, 2025, requiring a compliant driver’s license or alternate documents for boarding domestic flights. For millions of Americans without a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID, Apple’s digital ID provides an accessible workaround, leveraging the ubiquitous US passport to bridge the gap.
How Apple’s Digital ID Works?

Setting up a digital ID is a straightforward process. It is just like adding a credit card to Apple Pay. Users with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 18.1 or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later on watchOS 11.1 can open the Wallet app, tap the “+” button, and select “Driver’s License or ID Cards.” From there, choosing the “Digital ID” prompt is a guided process:
- Scan the photo page of your physical U. S passport
- Read the embedded NFC chip for authenticity verification
- Capture a live selfie and perform a series of head movements to confirm your identity via biometric checks.
Once added, the Digital ID syncs security to your device and optionally to a paired Apple Watch, where it is encrypted end to end. Apple emphasises that all data remains on the device, with no access granted to the company itself. Presenting the ID at the TSA reader mimics the Apple Pay tap:
- Double-click your device’s side button
- Select Digital ID
- Hold it near the scanner
- Review the requested information, like name and photo
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID
Note: Only the verifier sees the shared data, and only what they need.
At lunch, the feature is limited to domestic US flights and explicitly does not replace a physical passport for international travel or border crossing. However, Apple has teased broad adoption. Future updates will enable digital ID for age and identity checks at select businesses.
Privacy and Security Concerns

“This is not just about convenience, it’s about putting control back in users’ hands,” said Jennifer Bailey, Vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, in a statement. “Since we introduced driver’s licenses in Wallet back in 2022, we have seen overwhelming enthusiasm for having IDs on devices. Digital ID expands that to everyone with the passport, making secure verification a reality for more people.”
Critics of digital IDs often cite risks like data breach surveillance, but Apple positions digital ID as a privacy fortress. The future leverages the same Secure Element hardware that powers Apple Pay, certified to the highest industry standards. The feature shows that passport data never leaves your device unless explicitly shared. Biometric authentication ties presentation to the device owner, thwarting unauthorized use even if a phone is lost or stolen.
“Apple’s approach here is clever: by storing everything on the device and using tokenisation for verifications, they minimise exposure,” noted cyber security expert Dr Elena Vasquez from Electronic Frontier Foundation in an interview. “It is a step forward from fragmented state systems, but users should treat it as a supplement, not a sole reliance.” Early adopters, eco sentiment on social media, praising the game-changing ease for frequent flyers.
